As part of Ryobi’s campaign promoting their Stick Vac range, we created a short 3D animation to be used for a TV ad. This included a mixture of live film footage and motion graphics.

Laying the foundation

We started with a storyboard prior to the creation of 3D assets, animation, VFX - plus visualisation.

This workflow allows for maximum collaboration between our teams, ensuring the client is happy at every step of the process.

Bringing the invisible to life

We added overlays on top of the 3D renders to show airflow, particle movement and air filtration, something that wouldn't have been possible to show with just film footage.

Later, as the product was given a new look, we were tasked with replacing the old vacuum colours throughout the ad with new ones. We updated the ad by compositing the new vacuum colours and renders into the original footage, ensuring consistency while maintaining the ad’s high-quality aesthetic.

Recreating reality in 3D

For the vacuum replacement, we had to replicate the environment that was shot in the live action footage inside of blender.

To bring the Ryobi Stick Vac to life, we didn’t just stop at 3D animation. We took it a step further by utilising cutting-edge techniques such as 3D motion tracking and CGI. We used these tools to digitally replace the original green vacuum with a fresh new colour, all without compromising on visual realism.

We matched the CGI lighting with the environment, added natural-looking shadows, and employed rotoscoping to seamlessly blend the live-action footage with the digital elements.

This Ryobi Stick Vac campaign is a perfect example of how combining 3D animation, live-action, and motion graphics can take product advertising to the next level.

From storyboard to final tweaks, we worked closely with the client to make sure every detail was spot on. By using overlays to show airflow and particle movement, and seamlessly swapping in the new vacuum design, we kept the ad fresh and engaging. The end result? A vibrant, eye-catching TV ad that showcases the vacuum’s standout features in a way that's both informative and visually exciting!
